UAA books former Congresswoman Liz Cheney for $151,000 speaking fee

Former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney will be speaking in Anchorage in May. She was invited to speak by the University of Alaska College of Arts and Sciences.

When asked what he speaking fee was, Austin Osborne, Chief Marketing Officer for UAA, told the Landmine:

Due to the contract with Liz Cheney’s team, the speaker fee is confidential, but as a public institution, I’m sure you’re aware UAA is subject to the Alaska Public Records Act. If you would like the speaker fee number, you are welcome to submit an official request under the Alaska Public Records Act and I can start that process. What I can share is that the costs for the entire CAS Community Lecture series, including the Liz Cheney engagement, are paid for using ticket sales and sponsorships.

However, a source inside the University told the Landmine her speaking fee was $151,000.

The Landmine put in a records request for the contract, but was told it will take up to 15 working days to get a response. From Osborne:

Thanks, Jeff. Please consider this formal receipt of your official request on 2/25/25. Under the provisions of Alaska Statutes (AS) 40.25.123, the University has adopted policies and regulations regarding the disclosure of public records which you can view here: Regents Policy Chapter 06.02. Under P06.02.06, the University has 15 working days to respond to your request with any responsive documents. I will be in touch as soon as I can.

Her talk, titled “Defending Democracy: A Conversation with Liz Cheney,”  will be held on May 1 at the Atwood Theater. Tickets are on sale and range from $687 at the highest to $175 at the lowest.

Depending on ticket sales, her fee will likely be covered. It’s not clear if there are additional fees, like airfare and accommodation. We will update the story when we obtain the contract from UAA.

Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, served as Wyoming’s sole representative from 2017-2023. She angered many Republicans when she voted to impeach President Donald Trump in 2021 following the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Cheney was appointed to the United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack in 2021 by then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D – California). She was later removed as House Republican Conference chair and was censured by the Wyoming GOP. Cheney was defeated in a landslide by now-Representative Harriet Hageman (R-WY) in the 2022 Republican primary. Hageman was supported by Trump.

Sloppy Jeff again: The least expensive ticket is pretty obviously not $175. As your image from the CenterTix website clearly shows, the price is $114.50.

Or daughters of former Governors (L.M.)? Or sons of former rich daddies(E.M, D.J.). Or sons of former Senators (RFK)? Or sons of former Presidents (Bush much?) Everyone has relations.

Nobody goes to these things to hear what the speaker has to say. These are political payoff opportunities. It’s a way to pay back politicians for what they did when they were viable. It’s a legal way to settle bribes without that pesky campaign disclosure thing. Does anybody truly think Hunter’s paintings were worth hundreds of thousands? Or a seat on a board of directors was because of knowledge and expertise? Think Fox News thought it could possibly recoup 17 million dollars paid for Sarah Palin to be a “news contributor?” Really believe the city of Anchorage couldn’t find a… Read more »

You can’t even read the short little article before jumping to conclusions and responding erroneously. UAA is not spending any of their money on this. All the money is from ticket sales and sponsors.

Repeal all appropriated funding to the U of A, especially if they’re going to pay politicians to talk. They’re a land grant college.

Absolutely ZERO Fraud Waste and Abuse at UAA. Seriously? Liz Cheney for $151,000 speaking fee? Tickets range from $687 at the highest to $175 at the lowest? I’ll put my $687 into the cabin first. Just NOT seeing the value with Cheney. Exactly why she was voted out of office.

I would only attend this if someone gave me a ticket. I would be there solely for the purpose of mooning Cheney. I have zero respect for her. The Jan 6 committee was a Democrat PR ploy and Cheney and Kinzinger played right into their hands. The committee heard only what supported the Ds’ fantasies. No Republicans who had different opinions and evidence were permitted to sit on the committee, one of Pelosi’s many breaches of House traditions and ethics.
