State of Alaska’s tax director is out

Colleen Glover, who served as Governor Mike Dunleavy (R – Alaska) tax director since he was first elected in 2018, is no longer in that role. No announcement was made about her departure, which was effective June 24 according to a separation report the Landmine obtained from the Department of Administration.

The Landmine received a tip yesterday that she was no longer working for the Department of Revenue (DOR). When asked why she was let go, a spokesperson for DOR said, “We can’t comment on personnel matters.” Sources confirm she was fired. The tax director is a partially exempt position, meaning Glover served at the pleasure of Revenue Commissioner Adam Crum.

Dunleavy appointed Crum Revenue commissioner in November. Prior to that, Crum served as Dunleavy’s Health commissioner. Glover is not the first high profile departure since Crum stepped into the role. In February, then-Deputy Commissioner Brian Fechter resigned. Fechter’s departure was also not announced.

The tax director oversees all major tax collections to the state, as well as manages the audit process to ensure taxpayer compliance. A source in Dunleavy’s office said a replacement has not yet been chosen. Brandon Spanos, the deputy tax director, is listed as acting tax director on the Tax Division’s website. He is still listed as deputy tax director director in the state employee directory.

It’s not clear who is signing audit reports, which are vital for recovering unpaid taxes for taxpayers. The bulk of Alaska’s tax revenue comes from the oil and gas industry.

This is a developing story.

Who knows what happened but my opinion is Dunleavy is an empty suit, dearth of leadership or vision. He is a placeholder governor keeping the seat warm until someone with some actual vision and talent steps up. He’s not returning to teaching so my bet is he runs on a ‘I didn’t bankrupt the state’ record for Congress.

Could there be a problem with Adam Crum? These people seemed to be having no problem until he showed up there. Or did he see something others didn’t? We need more data.
