On September 28 and 29, the Anchorage Assembly met to discuss AO 2021-91, the controversial “mask mandate.” On both nights, the Assembly chambers were filled almost entirely with unmasked individuals protesting the proposed mandate. The mood in the room was charged, and both nights were filled with near-constant interruptions, heckling, and outbursts targeted at sitting Assembly members. Many individuals wore yellow Stars of David, meant to evoke parallels between Covid restrictions and the Holocaust, and repeatedly invoked Nazi history and imagery.
Some of those present were respectful and provided thoughtful testimony, while others shouted, jeered, danced, or made violent remarks. On September 28, a man near the press box stated that it was “time to get out the gallows” for the Assembly. On September 29, a man in the front row told a confused security guard attempting to remove a disruptive individual that “Alaska is a stand-your-ground state” and that continued removals could result in the killing of security personnel. Multiple people were arrested at the September 29 meeting, including one individual with a firearm.
On the same day, a man providing testimony called Christopher Constant, who is openly gay, a “cock sucker.” The audience responded with sustained cheering, laughter, flag-waving, and applause.

The pandemic provided an avenue to reverse the concentration of economic power and its negative effects. Instead, most people chose to go the other direction (didn’t the net worth of Jeff Bezos double?). Understanding the effects of this stranglehold is far more important than understanding the machinations of one or another titular head of government and their cult of personality. I’m sure most people will never get it because they’re addicted to the level of convenience they receive from our current economy.

Looks like Mayor Bronson finally realized that a little leadership goes a long way, or perhaps his legal advisors got ahold of him. And it made a difference – pictures on adn from yesterday’s meeting do not have a single yellow star in sight. There will always be some filled with hate and blaming others for their problems, but is it good leadership that keeps those people from taking over the discourse.
