The Alaska Bar Association’s 2022 featured speaker thinks the U.S. Constitution is “kind of trash”

The Alaska Bar Association is holding their annual convention this week in Anchorage. Elie Mystal, an attorney and justice correspondent, is the featured speaker for the convention. Given his public statements, Mystal is a curious speaker for an association whose members are required to swear to support the U.S. Constitution.

In March, Mystal said the Constitution is “kind of trash” when he appeared on The View promoting his book “Allow Me to Retort: A Black Guy’s Guide to the Constitution.” In the interview he said the Constitution was written by “slavers and colonists and white people who were willing to make deals with slavers and colonists.” He then explained that the Constitution “was written without the consent of black and brown people in this country and without the consent of women in this country.”

The Constitution has been amended 27 times since 1791. Amendments include abolishing slavery (1865), granting women the right to vote (1920), limiting presidential terms (1951), and guaranteeing U.S. citizens who are at least 18 the right to vote (1971).

Mystal has made many other controversial statements. On Georgia Republican U.S. Senate candidate Hershel Walker, Mystal said, “Walker’s gonna do what he’s told. And that’s what Republicans like. That’s what Republicans want from their negroes. To do what they’re told.”

In an op-ed he wrote this week in the Nation, he said of a recent poll that claimed independent white women were breaking for Republicans in the midterms, “because if there is one thing that binds mainstream Democrats together, it is their collective ability to be perpetually surprised by the fact that about half of white women voters will support the patriarchy.”

In 2020, the Alaska Bar Association invited attorney Alan Dershowitz to be their featured speaker. Many on the left were outraged he was invited because of his representation of Jeffrey Epstein and O.J. Simpson, as well accusations against him that he denied and were never proven. The Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees every accused person the right of representation. The 2020 convention was cancelled days after Dershowitz was announced as the featured speaker. They cited Covid as the reason.

Well am confused. The US constitution, as originally written, viewed black men as property and women as non-equal citizens.

Why is stating fact controversial?

Next thing ya know it is going to be controversial to say all 45 US presidents, to date, were men and thought Jesus was the messiah.

Jeff is another of these “aggrieved conservatives” who is outraged that sedition on the Right is not treated as free speech and outraged that free speech on the Left is not treated as sedition.

My assumption is Jeff has not read the constitution nor is aware of recent US supreme court cases that refer to the US constitution as a biblical non-living document. I assume-Jeff being an ethical journalist does not allow his personal political beliefs to influence his reporting.

Seems completely reasonable to expect that people can swear to uphold the laws contained within a document while also criticizing the same document. Even down to the municipal level, city employees often enforce code while not agreeing with it. Fortunately there are means to improve these documents. What a garbage article.

“Walker’s gonna do what he’s told. And that’s what Republicans like. That’s what Republicans want from their negroes. To do what they’re told.” Mystal said, he simply got the political party wrong. If African Americans, blacks, colored, or negroes dare to challenge the Democrat party line they are treated like pariahs. There are currently political races in this country where the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) are backing white people over colored people because of the political party they belong to. They are actively campaigning against colored people and for white people…let that sink in. The… Read more »

Your saying a women should only vote for women?

Non-sense aside-

(Re)Read the original US constitution-It is very clear it does not bestow equal rights to all US citizens.

Can we at least agree on that factual statement?

88 is a white supremacist numerical code for “Hiel Hitler.” Jeff do you monitor your website? Because you are de facto providing a platform for hate speech. I thought that was what Twitter was for?

I never said anything about women.

The rest of your very nonsensical statement aside, I thank you for obviously agreeing with me regarding factual statements.

You are literally complaining that the NAACP has done its research. Just because Clarence Thomas is Black doesn’t mean that he cares about the best interests of Black people as a whole, just as Elizabeth Warren’s whiteness doesn’t make her exclusively concerned about white people as a whole. You’re upset that the NAACP isn’t reductive enough.

You don’t understand what I’m saying. You think you do, but you don’t. You are woke and understand nothing. The fact that you think I am somehow “upset that the NAACP isn’t reductive enough” speaks volumes. It’s sadly hilarious that some wokester said “You’re upset that the NAACP isn’t reductive enough” Your quote is a perfect example of why wokeism is nothing more than a heaping bag of wet drippy diarrhea set ablaze by the meanignless thought of those with nothing more than imaginary unicorn sparkles.

Sorry to hear about your feels today. It probably has something to do with the fact you are incapable of addressing the point I brought up and so you are taking it out on yourself through physical manifestations. Best of luck though, I hear they have pills that help.

Yes, let us only tolerate those who confirm our bias and who make us comfortable in our beliefs. How about in Alaska we only allow Justice Clarence Thomas or Tucker Carlson to speak to our Bar Association and Mike Dunleavy to appoint all judges.

Dershowitz also mangled the Constitution to support Trump and, by the way, said that if a President gave Alaska back to Russia it is not an impeachable offense. Mystal does much less damage.
