New House majority press person resigned from Homer News after Rep. Vance letter about Charlie Kirk story

In a story that could probably only happen in Juneau, the mostly Democratic House majority’s new press person has some recent, and dramatic, history with a member of the Republican House minority.

Chloe Pleznac resigned as a reporter from the Homer News in October 2025, along with three other staff, after the newspaper’s decision to remove an article Pleznac wrote about a vigil following the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

The resignation came after Representative Sarah Vance (R – Homer) wrote a letter to the publisher, Carpenter Media Group, expressing disgust about the story.

In the letter, Vance wrote:

From the opening paragraphs, reporter Chloe Pleznac branded Charlie Kirk with prejudicial labels such as “far-right” and “Christian-Nationalist icon,” while smearing his views as “racist,” “controversial,” and “conspiracy theories.” These are not facts, they are editorial judgments and political talking points. If the intent was to write an opinion piece, it should have been clearly marked as such.

Carpenter Media Group acquiesced to Vance’s demands, pulling down the story and then reposting it with several changes without consulting or informing the editor of the Homer News. Not long after, Pleznac and three other staff resigned. They wrote an op-ed in the Anchorage Daily News explaining their decision to resign from the newspaper.

In the aftermath, the story was covered by the New York Times and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation

Out of a job, Pleznac applied for a press job with House majority. She was hired in November.

Pleznac told the Landmine, “Accepting the job wasn’t personal. I needed a job. I am more bothered about the newspaper’s decision to pull the story. I am super grateful and excited for my new role with the House majority.”

In a twist of irony, the House majority press office is located directly across from Vance’s office!

House majority press office is 122. Vance’s office is 114.

When asked about the House majority’s decision to hire Pleznac, Vance told the Landmine, “I have no personal vendetta against Chloe. If she’s going to be a great staffer, then I wish her success. Me calling out the article was geared at wanting fair and unbiased reporting.”

While Vance and Pleznac are now neighbors, the matter is not totally unresolved.

Vance is currently facing an ethics probe into her use of official state letterhead and state resources in the letter she wrote in response to Pleznac’s article about the Charlie Kirk vigil.

Vance is another in a long line of far-right whiners who believe themselves entitled to play the victim anytime their fragile feelings get hurt. The fact that she used her position to try and bully a local business to her way of thinking is a gross abuse of that position and should never be allowed. She lacks even the decency to apologize and show some understanding of her bad behavior. So resigning is clearly too much to expect.

Lol you’re probably one of the handful of sore losers that filed an ethics complaint against her with nothing else better to do with your life, am I right or am I right?

Bwahahahaha Mark Kelsey, one of the most consistent whiners on everything from Epstein to Eastman. What a loser. I wouldn’t piss in your mouth if your teeth were on fire. You sucked as a sports writer, sucked worse as a publisher, and now all you do is suck…

You sound really triggered, anonymous coward. Hey, speaking of Eastman, remember that time a couple years ago when Rep. Kevin J. McCabe of Big Lake, who never misses a chance to whine about Republicans needing to stop criticizing each other, filed a completely fabricated ethics complaint against Eastman and Kurka, TWO FELLOW REPUBLICANS? It’s still shocking to me he escaped accountability for that really bad, really dishonest behavior.

Instead, he was rewarded with a seat on the Ethics Committee. If that’s not a major conflict of interest and slap in the face to honest Alaskans, I don’t know what is.

A local business? Alaska is abbreviated AK, Carpenter Media Group is based in Alabama abbreviated AL. It also seems like the non-local business agreed, at least in part, with what she wrote. If journalists stuck to reporting the news and spent less time sharing their opinion, maybe their occupation wouldn’t be in a death knell. The fact that this former “journalist” went to work where she did doesn’t help the image of an unbiased press.

What an ignorant statement. So it’s okay for Vance to bully a private business because it’s not local? Nevermind the stupidity of trying to pretend a business in Homer, staffed by Homer residents to serve Homer is somehow not a local business. Vance was way out of line. So is your idiotic comment, “Steve”.

“Don”,
Nothing that you wrote here in anyway shape or form shows my comment to be ignorant of anything. If you think Home Depot or Walmart are local Alaskan businesses, that’s ignorant. Next time you want to call names in your rant, just call names in your rant instead of trying to use words that you do not understand about conversations that you do not understand.

This isn’t about Home Depot, retard. Do you even get that we’re talking about the Homer News? Are you really saying a newspaper that’s run by people who actually live in Homer, writing stories about stuff that happens in Homer, for people in Homer, isn’t local? That’s the dumbest thing ever. The only thing dumber is your belief that it’s okay for Vance to abuse her position because the Homer News isn’t local.

It’s called an analogy. You see Home Depot is headquartered in Georgia and employs locals in any given area, it does not make Home Depot a local business. By the same token Carpenter Media Group (the company that runs Homer News) is headquartered in Alabama and employs locals in any given area, it does not make Carpenter Media (the company that runs Homer News) a local business. It’s really not a difficult concept to understand. I’m not sure where you got the idea about my beliefs regarding Sarah Vance, nothing I’ve written here has anything to do with approving of… Read more »

I mean, how many times would it take seeing Vances beading eyes searching into your office while she’s gnawing on the flesh of a raw fish with her tiny yellow, pointy teeth before you know you gotta get out of there.

“………the mostly Democratic House majority………”

Given power by RINOs. For the record, and from the Legislature’s official website, the House is made up of:

21 Republicans
14 Demorats
1 “Independent”
4 “Not Affiliated”

Thus, Republicans are in the majority 21 to 19 of all others. A Republican is the “majority leader”,a Republican is the “minority leader”, and the lone “independent” (who used to be a Democrat) is the Speaker.

Alaskan political parties are a scam.

Nope. “Independents” are fine. There is one of them so designated (but he still sports the same stripes he always did), and four others are officially designate non-affiliated (even though all four demonstrated their stripes in non-partisan elective office at the local level).

The ones declared Republican disgust me when they take party money and middle finger the party platform or conspire with Democrats for power over their peers. Regularly. Predictably. And while the party leadership does nothing.

Worked out pretty well for Chloe, good paying state salary plus benefits, she’s doing much better for herself I’m sure than making less than $20 an hour at a dying media website that no one subscribed to!

I hope all of you upvoting my comment realize I believe Chloe, and her past actions, are part of the reason that media website died out by the way! Don’t begrudge her at all for finding a new and better-paying job for herself, more power to her, but it doesn’t mean I think she’s good at what she does!

I’m seeing the past and ongoing truth in your notation of such “journalism” in killing their own industry. Major corporate media entities are dying, and today we’re even seeing Trump successfully suing them for libel. It’s absolute beauty!! Everything the Democrat/communist/socio-sexual sickos touch turns to shit. I’m enjoying independent news/opinion sites like this, and appreciate the ability to “talk back” to the parasites who try to infect the place……….”Peaceful Protesting”………..lol…………
